I.  Call to order:  Ed Hockenbury

 

II. Introduction of Athletic Directors

III. Treasurers Report: Kevin Reill

Kevin discussed the VSADA finances.  There was some discussion around raising membership fees by $5 per person.

 

Motion to raise membership fee by $5:  Kevin Reill  2nd: Mike O’Day  Passed

 

Further discussion revolved around paying a stipend to the VSADA Treasurer.

 

Motion to provide VSADA Treasurer with annual $500 stipend:  Mike O’Day  2nd:  Merlyn Courser  Passed

 

IV. Secretary’s Report: Ron Stankevich

 

Motion to accept:  Brian Trottier  2nd: Gary Girard  Passed

 

V. Announcements:

·        Ray Pellegrini, new VPA Executive Director was introduced

·        Bob Johnson, new VPA Student Activities Director was introduced

·        Tim Brown indicated that Mt. Anthony was hosting the D1 State Track Meet.  Contact Tim for further information.

·        Mike O’Day indicated that some long sleeve VSADA shirts were available – contact Mike if interested.

·        Lake Region will not host the track meet originally scheduled for May 21.

 

VI. NIAAA Report: Mike O’Day

·        Kevin Reill represented Vermont at the Section I conference

·        CAA exam will be given at the state conference

·        National conference is December 12-16, 2003 in Indiana.  Contact nfhs.org website for more information

 

VII. ASEP Report: Bruce Wheeler

Upcoming Clinics

·        June 12/14 @ Mill River

·        June 19/21 @ Windsor

·        June 26/28 @ Essex

 

Dues are $80 for First Aid and $90 for Coaching Principles.  Need a minimum of 12 participants to host the clinic.  There is a two-week deadline and participants must pay prior to attending.

 

VIII. VPA Report:  Burns Page

·        Mouth guards will be required on the middle school level

·        IABO wants to incorporate a three-person officiating team for basketball, fees would be $42 per official

·        Due to concern over cost, no discernable benefit and that other sports will institute a three-official mandate, Burns will go back to the Activity Standards committee indicating that the VSADA membership was unanimous that a three-person crew would financially hamper schools during a time of budget cuts and freezes.

·        Dan Marlow complimented Burns for his communication skills and willingness to listen to concerns expressed by the membership

 

IX. Activity Standards:  Merlyn Courser

·        Sportsmanship concerns were raised, especially those of adults

·        Out-of-state play for girls’ ice hockey was sanctioned

·        Discussion around 14 games versus 16 games for baseball and softball is still undecided

·        Regarding public-private schools discussion, committee is studying what New Hampshire does in this instance.

·        There have been some appeals for student athletes hoping to have 5th year to incorporate four compete seasons in athletics

 

Ed Hockenbury thanked the efforts of Merlyn and Glenn for their service.

 

X.  Old Business

VSADA Constitution and Bylaws

Motion to change name to VSADA:  Dan Marlow  2nd: Kevin Reill  Passed

 

Motion to remove student representative: Kevin Reill  2nd: Mike O’Day  Passed

 

Motion to change name from Vermont Headmasters to Vermont Principal’s Association:  Dan Hudson  2nd: Tim Brown  Passed

 

Motion to delete relationship with Vermont Coaches Association:  Mike O’Day  2nd:  Kevin Reill  Passed

 

In our efforts to create an Executive Director for the VSADA to ensure continuity, Merlyn was authorized to research what other states currently have enacted. 

Motion to send Merlyn to the June meeting:  Dan Hudson  2nd: Vince Buttice  Passed

 

Motion to have NIAAA and LTC representatives as well as the Past President on the Executive committee:  Kevin Reill  2nd: Sandy Chicoine Wagner  Passed

 

Ed will make corrections to the bylaws and forward them for review.

 

Approval of 2003-04 Executive Board

President: Bob Hingston, Vice president: Ron Stankevich, Secretary: Amy Molina, Kevin Reill: Treasurer, Mike O’Day, NIAAA, Tim Brown: LTC

Motion to accept Dan Marlow and Kathi Bierworth for a three-year term to the Activity Standards Committee:  Gary Girard  2nd:  Kevin Reill  Passed

 

XI. VSADA Awards

·        Service Awards presented by Bob Hingston

·        Tim Brown and Kevin Reill 15 years

·        Mike O’Day 20 years

·        NIAAA Award of Merit presented by Mike O’Day to Merlyn Courser for 41 years of service.

·        Small School awarded to Bob Hingston

·        Large School awarded to Ed Hockenbury

·        Secretary awarded to Ron Stankevich

·        President’s award to Ed Hockenbury

·        Distinguished Service awarded to Burns Page

·        Recognition of retiring athletic directors were presented to Merlyn Courser and Glenn Olson

·        VPA Award of recognition presented by Burns Page to Merlyn Courser and Glenn Olson

 

XII. New Business

·        Survey of coach salaries was distributed by Bob Hingston

·        Hartford Athletic Council presented by Brian Trottier.  It is in its 3rd year and is well received.  It is a wonderful public relations tool and doubles as an opportunity for athletes to make a difference in their school and surrounding communities.

 

XIII.Open Forum

·        Mike Donoghue reminded everyone of the June 1 Athlete of the Year awards

·        Brian Trottier suggested that the schools take a moment to call pro shops and thank them
