·        NIAAA has a great website – www.niaaa.org

·        Handed out membership forms

·        CAA handout and program synopsis

VIII. ASEP Report: Bruce Wheeler

·        Upcoming Clinics will be announced in a week or so.  Tentatively scheduled for Nov 6/8, Nov 13/15, Nov 20/22. Call Bruce if you wish to host a clinic on one of those dates.

·        As of 9/8, 1200 coaches have been certified in First Aid & 1500 have been certified in Coaching Principles

·        Courses are available on-line

·        Cost of clinics will go up in April 2004 to $95 for FA & $105 for CP

·        All instructors will need to be re-certified and ACEP is working on a deal with Gatorade to finance this project.

·        Bruce is recommending to VPA and VSADA that we continue to use the FA and CP as our base certification and not use the proposed Bronze level certification because of the high cost.  He recommends using the Bronze level as a re-certification tool only.

·        VPA to begin mandating a re-certification process for coaches who have been ACEP certified.  No plan is in place but Bruce’s recommendation is for the AD to provide written confirmation that some sort of “continuing education” has taken place.  Also coaches would have to pass an online test of VPA Bylaws, policies and rules.

·        Bruce recommends that any coach certified before 1997-1998 or 1998-1999 have to the end of the 2005-2006 year to get re-certified.  All others would stay on a 7-year policy.

·        Tom Conte questioned whether we should have a minimum and maximum number of years that the re-certification would need to occur within. Ie.  Minimum of 2 years and maximum of 7.

·        A group will act as a liaison with the VPA to put together a formal proposal about re-certification.  Gary Girard, Mike O’Day, Bruce Wheeler, Tom Conte and Brian Trottier all volunteered to work on the proposal.

·        Reminder that Dues remain $80 for First Aid and $90 for Coaching Principles.  Need a minimum of 12 participants to host the clinic.  There is a two-week deadline and participants must pay prior to attending.

IX. Activity Standards:  Kathi Bierwith & Dan Marlow

·        There will be another Female Athlete Triad sometime this year.

·        3 person officiating debate was tabled in order to further study the issue.  The officials have agreed to continue to work 3 person crews at the 2-person crew rate. The basketball committee will be charged with surveying all the AD’s and Coaches in the state.

·        Sue Duprat suggested that the Committee ask the assignor for a list of officials and the number of games that they worked either as 2 person or 3 person.

·        Fall Tournament Update: SMC and UVM are not available this year which is a big problem.  College of St Joseph’s, Barre Town and Randolph have all volunteered to host soccer playoffs.

·        A Sportsmanship Committee will be formed this year.

·        Athletic Directors are reminded that Eyewear will be mandatory for all High School Girls Lacrosse players this coming season – Spring 2004!

·        There will be a late fee charged to schools that do not complete tournament applications or mandatory paperwork - $100 per instance.

·        The Hall of Fame was a huge hit and people are reminded to nominate inductees for this Class.

·        Taxation of officials by the IRS is a subject that will be coming down the line in the next year or so.  We have been alerted that within one year we will need to come up with a way to track how much we are paying officials.  There was some discussion about this being the officials responsibility or the responsibility of the assignor.

·        Committee assignments are listed on the VPA website – www.vpaonline.org. Please check them out.

·        Activities Standards will meet again on Dec 3 at U-32

X. VPA Report:  Bob Johnson

·        Out of Season Policy.  It was changed last year but the information did not go out to schools. Lots of problems this fall with the new 10-day rule.  10 days before the start of fall practices, fall coaches are prohibited from having any coaching contact with their teams/players.

·        There was more discussion on Open Gym and Pre-season clinics. Bob Johnson interprets Open Gym (staffed by the coaches) as being legal as long as they are open to everyone and are non-instructional.

·        VIFL Meeting is on Nov 17.

·        The fate of Spring football practices will be decided after a recommendation from the VIFL.

·        T-shirt Proposal. There has been a proposal made to the VPA Development Committee to sign on with one vendor who will be responsible for t-shirt for all VPA sponsored events.  The VPA needs these kinds of sponsorship deals to keep dues and costs down.  Bob Hingston read a letter from the VT BB Coaches Association that stated that they would lose a lot of money (that they use for scholarship $$) if the VPA went with this plan.

·        Gomer Morgan was asked to talk about his problem with Religious holidays. He passed out a list of Muslim, Christian, and Jewish holidays that he is prohibited from playing on.

XI.  Old Business

Merlyn Courser gave a brief report on her trip to the Executive Director’s National Meeting.  She handed out a AD Survival Guide, and list of workshop topics.  She also suggested that we put together a “book” of Athletic Directors with bio information so that everyone can get to know each other better.

By hand vote, the group decided to investigate a job description for an Executive Secretary position for the VSADA.

XII. New Business

·        Medi Keenan sent Bob Hingson a letter asking for AD’s to consider them when placing orders for Athletic Training supplies.  If you send them a price quote from last year or this year, they will try to match it.  Contact numbers are 800-225-8634 or fax: 781-961-5750

·        Mike Donoghue gave his annual plea for rosters, schedules and game reports. He also passed out a sheet listing phone numbers.

·        Calendar Committee: Bob Hingston brought up the need to have a group look at the problems surrounding athletic seasons.  A group was formed to take another look at length of seasons, start dates and tournament dates.  Melba Masse, Dan Marlow, Gomer Morgan, Mike O’Day, Brian Trottier, Pat Merriam all volunteered.  Gomer will get the group together.

·        Tim Brown: Mt Greylock (MA) is looking for Girls Basketball games.
